The forest had greeted them, almost immediately, with a sinister, ominous feeling. It drove the heebie jeebies deep into both Rach and Sage and left them spooking at their own shadows. After two hours of hopping around like fools at nothing Sage laughed out loud, sounding hollow, tiny, and distant in the dampening forest. Sage lifts her head and stares back at her rider, ears twitching with curiosity.enlighten us, Rach, what, pray-tell, is so funny about this? Rach shook her head and hugged herself. "Absolutely nothing, Sage. There's nothing funny about this which is why this is so funny!" Sage gave her a very curious look as though she thought Rach's sanity had already been broken before shaking herself out and continuing on.
I have never quite understood you, Rach, and you have solidified this fact even more today. Shall we? She bobbed her head. Rach sighed and released the reins, giving Sage more slack. The harlequinne mare instantly stretched into a rolling canter. I wanna get with the others as soon as possible. she informed her rider. Rach stared around them as the trees grew dense- well. . . denser.
She'd noticed a peculiarity about this place. It grew dense, randomly, as they went along. Deepening and then staying and then deepening. As though the land were trying to make them succumb to claustraphobia. She snorted and rolled her eyes at the thought. As if anyone could feel claustraphobic outside. . . could they?
She lost herself in her thoughts, her violet eyes focused intently on the world around them. RACH! Sage screamed into her mind, prancing a strange, nervous jig and tossing her head. you realize you're body's still here on earth, si? well pay attention!
"Oh, sorry Sage." Rach apologized guiltily. "What is it?" she asked, peering into the darkness to see if something had spooked her mare.

"What?"
I want to know what time it is. I feel like we've been at this for hours and we haven't gone anywhere. she snorted, flaring her black nostrils and flexing her neck. Rach sighed and fumbled with her camcorder. Getting it put away she dug into her pocket hunting for her phone.
"Keep walking while I look." she tied her reins together and dropped them. Wrestling with her cloak she stopped watching where they were going. Sage dropped her head to see the ground easier, her nose skimming the cold, damp earth. She froze, her yellow eyes gleaming in the moonlight as clouds passed back to expose it. She was nose to nose with a bleached, brittle, and very equine skull. rach?
"Hold your horses I got my phone. . . huh. . . that's funny. . . . its saying the same thing it did when we stepped off the boat."
rach. . .
"Lemme check my watch."
Rach urgency started to lace the petrified mares voice.
"It's. . . . stopped too. . . and the dial won't turn. . . what the he-"
RACH! IWANNAGOBACKGETOFFMEIMGOINGBACKIMGETTINGOUTOFHEREYOUNEVERSAIDANYTHINGABOUTNODAMNEDDEADHORSES! Sage whinnied and reared up, spinning around on her heels. She bolted back the way the had come in a 'sorry baby gotta go' fashion. If anyone had asked the mare she would have sworn there was a bellowing laughter haunting her down the dark forest trail, shadow hounds howling and snapping at her heels.
"WHOA!" Rach yelled, holding onto the saddle horn and reins. Her mares long braid whipping her in the face. "STOP! STOP DAMMIT STOP!" Sage threw her head back as Rach yanked the reins to the right, attempting a one-rein stop in her desperation. She went flying as Sage tucked her hind end under her, slid and did an impromptu roll back, her legs flying out from under her. The Harlequinne landed hard in the dirt and lay there, stunned. Rach was lucky she'd been thrown when she had.
"You yellow bellied coward." rach muttered when she got her wind back.
